Police in South China's Guangdong Province arrested a knife-wielding man who tried break into a bank for some extra holiday cash using a backhoe.
The 26-year-old armed suspect used the heavy machinery to plow though the security doors of a bank in Meizhou at 1 am, setting off the alarm, police said.
Officers arrived to a gaping hole in the bank where a street-facing glass wall used to be.
Police said they found the suspect was hiding in the bank.
There he resisted arrest, swinging a kitchen knife at officers.
Police were able to subdue the man without injury.
The suspect told police he attempted the robbery because he had no money to return home for the Chinese New Year on January 28, police said.
It was not reported where the man had acquired the excavator.
Meizhou police have not released further details about the case.
